A landmark international school offering state-of-the-art teaching facilities

Broadway Malyan won the commission to design a landmark International School in the heart of Singapore for one of Asia’s largest education organisations.

The Nexus International School campus is the flagship school for the Nexus brand and is designed to provide the template for the school of the future.

The new school provide spaces for 2,000 students ranging in age from 3 to 18 and is open to the local community outside school hours and at weekends. Facilities include a 50m indoor swimming pool, a sports field, two sports halls, an astroturf sports pitch and multiple outdoor play-decks plus improved public realm, a café, library, auditorium as well as a raft of adaptable learning spaces.

At the heart of the campus is the Innovation Hub, a showcase space dedicated to the development of new pedagogic ideas.

A range of initiatives work towards a design ambition of ‘zero waste, zero water, zero energy’ with technologies that see the pool heated through waste heat from learning spaces, smart shading operated by sunlight sensors and rainwater management enhanced to deal with local climatic conditions.

The vertical campus

Set between the Pan Island Expressway, a busy arterial route, and the Pelton Canal, part of the Singapore Park Connector Loop, the tight site called for an unusual “vertical campus” concept with the junior school on the lower floors and the senior school on the higher floors.

Shared leisure facilities including a café and play deck are located between the two schools with further shared facilities, including the library and auditorium on the lower floors. Mega labs on the 10th floor set the school apart and reflect the qualities typical of high quality commercial lab environments.

The design presents a dramatic and protective façade to the expressway, it’s dynamic and flowing form referencing the movement of cars and becoming a notable icon for drivers. On the canal side the campus opens up integrating itself into the local community and creating a new and improved public realm that activates the canal.

Technologically advanced

Our approach has been to embrace our masterplanning experience and create a school that is a microcosm of a successful smart city where services and spaces are fully integrated and in tune with their wider environment.

Designed as an Apple Distinguished School, technology is an integral part of the curriculum delivery and a primary driver in the design of the school infrastructure with the latest technology integrated throughout, from mobile smart projectors and Apple TV, cashless card systems, GPS tracking for school transport and radio frequency identification for all learners and staff.

Flexibility

Although technology is important, it is people that are the driving force behind the school’s design. We have prioritised the inclusion of flexible spaces that promote and support human interaction.

The Nexus school is designed around a ‘structural grid’ to maximise flexibility in recognition of the various and changing needs of students and teachers. Classrooms will not be closed off completely; instead bespoke furniture with acoustic panelling will be used to create spaces of the size required at the time.

The school provides a simple and flexible solution to year group clusters, hubs and classrooms that can be easily adapted to future trends.
