Broadway Malyan link up with Madrid college for new retail course
26th November 2018

A new educational collaboration aimed at creating the retail designers of the future has been launched by Broadway Malyan and a leading Madrid college.

The Executive Program Retail Architecture is a new course at Madrid’s IDESIE Business School as part of its Masters programme for architects and engineers.

The course will be led by Broadway Malyan director Jorge Ponce, who runs the practice’s Madrid studio, and will be supported by guest professors from a range of major companies within the retail sector.

The initiative follows a successful ‘Practical Design Basics’ course run by the college in 2017 that saw a series of guest lectures from senior Broadway Malyan directors including Margarida Caldeira, James Rayner and Jeremy Salmon as well as an open lecture from Group Chairman Stuart Rough.

Jorge said the new course was an exciting opportunity for the practice to engage with the next generation of architects while also helping shape the future of one of the most dynamic and evolving architectural sectors.

He said: “Architectural training is necessarily broad to ensure that entrants into the profession have the widest possible range of skills. However, it is also important to recognize that different sectors present their own challenges and this course is a reflection of the innovation and imagination that will drive the retail design of the future.

“At present there is nothing like this course available in Spain so it is a fantastic privilege for us to be invited to collaborate with IDESIE Business School with this course where we hope we can inspire the same passion that we feel for retail, while also sharing and developing exciting new ideas.”

The course will run from February to July 2019 and will be divided in to three parts. The first will examine retail design in all commercial formats, the second will focus on the development and management of shopping centres from a development perspective while the third element will be a design workshop.
