Broadway Malyan delivering landmark resort for Anantara
17th October 2022

Broadway Malyan has been appointed to deliver the interior design for an exciting new hotel project that will see the restoration and transformation of a former 16th century monastery in the east of Portugal.

The Anantara Royal Vila Vicosa Resort, the second major scheme in Portugal for Anantara Hotels, is located in rolling countryside of the beautiful Alentejo region and when complete will include 50 guest rooms, 10 suites, 16 residences, indoor and outdoor pools, restaurants, a spa and conferencing facilities.

The project, which is being developed in partnership with Investaureum, is one of a range of hospitality projects currently being designed and delivered by Broadway Malyan across Portugal and follows the recent completion of the award-winning World of Wine in Vila Nova de Gaia, which saw the successful integration of old and new to create a world class attraction celebrating the Portuguese wine industry.

Margarida Caldeira, who leads Broadway Malyan’s global hospitality team, said the project would provide a unique and inspiring destination in one of Portugal’s increasingly popular visitor destinations.

She said: “This wonderful project highlights the continued renaissance in Portugal’s hospitality sector and the growing demand for high quality hotels that meet the needs of an increasingly discerning leisure and business market.

“This is also a reflection of Portugal’s evergreen popularity and growing interest in exploring Portugal’s fascinating interior as an alternative to the traditional resort and city-break locations.

“At the heart of this project is a celebration of 500 years of history and so we have worked hard to sensitively retain as much of the original features as possible, respecting the place, its history and its architectural heritage.

“With its high vaulted ceilings, alcoves and stunning original azulejo tiles carefully integrated with a series of contemporary touches, we want to create an experience that is exciting, luxurious and incredibly authentic.”
