The €60m Évora Shopping Centre, designed by global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan for client EVRET, a joint venture between Imorendimento Madford and Developments, has broken ground in the industrial area of lmeirim, in Évora, Portugal. Ground breaking on the 16,500 square metre, two-storey Centre, which is due to open with 60 shops and 935 parking spaces in Spring 2013 and create 600 new jobs, coincided with the official opening of the adjacent Évora Retail Park, also designed by the practice’s Lisbon-based team.
Both the Centre and newly-opened Park are designed around a large sweeping granite stone wall, which will become a connecting and organisational route, with the Centre having been designed to be partially open-air, and anchored by a major supermarket and cinema.
Newly-installed chairman of Broadway Malyan, Stuart Rough said: “Ground breaking is the latest chapter in this high-profile scheme, which has been developed through close partnering between the client, project team and our Lisbon-based team of expert retail designers, which has delivered architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture design.”
Director of Madford Developments Anthony Henry Lyons said: "Located in one of the few areas in Portugal, where there is a lack of modern retail space, this Centre will respond to a real market need, offering an integrated and supplement retail offer that combines shopping, leisure and wellness."
The Centre and Park have received the backing of economic and public sector organisations which recognise their potential to contribute to the economic, social and commercial strength of the city of Evora, and the new Centre will be the first to be built in the world heritage city.
They will serve circa 300,000 people who live within 30 minutes of the site, and is expected to become a major attraction for the population of the Alentejo region.
