Following the successful delivery of the University of Nottingham Ningbo (UNNC) Li Dak Sum Incubator, the Teaching Building strengthens our partnership with the university and our shared commitment to human-centred design. The vision was to transform the existing structures into a dynamic space where faculty, staff, and students can explore and exchange knowledge.
Transformation of UNNC’s Teaching Building: Supporting a Student-Centred Experience Through Collaboration and Social Learning

Our design approach aimed to revitalise both the 20-year-old Teaching Building and the wider campus, addressing the building's tired and uninspiring external appearance. The building has undergone a complete facade transformation, replacing the dated rendered finish with a refined palette of modern precast concrete cladding. The result is a timeless and robust aesthetic that redefines the buildings’ presence. The main entrances have been emphasised by introducing a striking blue portal, guiding students from the central University Quad into a spacious, covered, and climate-controlled atrium.

Internally, the design has been optimised to support contemporary teaching methods that shift the focus from instruction to student-centred learning. A variety of flexible spaces accommodate practices such as lifelong learning and independent problem-solving. Breakout and social areas are integrated throughout the buildings, fostering a ‘sticky campus’ environment, encouraging students to remain on-site and engaged between classes.
