Great design should have a strong narrative. Something to excite, inspire and engage with the people who will be the end users. This section highlights some of our projects that we feel have an interesting story behind, whether it is to do with the original big idea, our process or the final result.

Sol Torremolinos Resort by Meliá completes landmark transformation to lead tourism evolution in Costa del Sol
9th February 2026
A decade-long partnership between Broadway Malyan, Nexprom and Meliá Hotels International reimagines a dated beachfront complex as a driver of regional growth
Following a ten-year programme of strategic renewal and a €54 million investment, Sol Torremolinos Resort has completed its transformation of an outdated hotel complex into a contemporary beachfront destination. Commissioned by Nexprom and Meliá Hotels International, the project reimagines three distinct buildings (Don Pablo, Don Pedro and Don Marco) as a unified resort serving both leisure and international business tourism.
The challenge was clear: modernise a site with structures dating between the 1960s and 1990s while maintaining year-round operations and responding to the evolving needs of Costa del Sol's tourism economy. Today, the resort's 900+ rooms, seven conference halls, and nine pools serve as a significant anchor for the region, accounting for 5% of Torremolinos' tourism activity.
Design rooted in place and continuity
Broadway Malyan's approach focused on connection: unifying three buildings under a coherent identity while opening the complex to its greatest asset, direct access to the shoreline. Through collaborative workshops with hotel management, the practice developed a phased masterplan that enhanced circulation, maximised sea views and strengthened the resort's relationship with the beachfront promenade.
“The masterplan focused on redefining the resort’s overall experience by reorganising its operations so that each of the three hotels could function independently while still forming a cohesive, interconnected hotel complex.”
The vision was to seamlessly reconnect the property with its natural surroundings and the coastline. To achieve this, major interior and exterior transformations were undertaken, creating new spaces, opening circulation flows, and removing barriers to the outdoors, ultimately enhancing the resort’s sense of unity, openness, and place.” – Eric Draper, Interior Designer
The strategy unfolded across five phases, allowing the resort to remain fully operational throughout while delivering measurable improvements at each stage:
Phase I focused on the original 1960s Don Pedro structure and its subsequent extensions over the following decade, updating its architectural expression with a contemporary facade that honours the building's heritage and signals its renewed purpose.
Phase II introduced the Beach Club, a light-filled pavilion connecting pool terraces to the promenade, and renovated 442 guest rooms, alongside a 900-capacity restaurant at the Don Pablo. This phase represented a strategic shift: opening the complex outward rather than inward, integrating it into the social and urban life of the beachfront.
Phase III focused on Don Marco's facade and spa, while reimagining 15,000 m² of gardens and shared outdoor spaces. These interventions unified access across all three hotels, improving wayfinding and creating a cohesive landscape framework.
Phases IV and V completed the modernisation of wellness facilities and MICE infrastructure, including a 720 m² ballroom and spa amenities designed for both relaxation and large-scale gatherings.
In July 2025, the final €13 million phase of Don Pablo was completed, enhancing the guest experience with redesigned bathroom layouts and upgraded finishes. The project also introduced a new façade that honours the original architectural concept while offering a modern look. These improvements reestablish the complex as one of Torremolinos’s premier hospitality destinations.
A commercial and cultural anchor
The completed resort represents more than an aesthetic upgrade. By accommodating both leisure and business tourism within a single, flexible framework, Sol Torremolinos positions the wider municipality to capture a broader spectrum of visitors year-round, directly supporting local employment, supply chains and destination vitality.
As tourism evolves across southern Europe, Sol Torremolinos offers a model: infrastructure that respects its origins, responds to its setting and anticipates the needs of the next generation of travellers.
