East Village Masterplan Named Finalist for the AT Test of Time Award 2025
23rd July 2025

We’re delighted to share that our East Village Masterplan in Calgary, Canada, has been named a finalist for the Architecture Today Awards in the International category.

Completed in 2008, East Village is a vibrant 49-acre neighbourhood located on the edge of downtown Calgary along Bow River. What was once a neglected industrial area with environmental degradation, disused infrastructure and limited public appeal, has since undergone a remarkable transformation into one of Calgary’s most dynamic, inclusive, and liveable districts.

Following an international design competition, Broadway Malyan was appointed by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) to deliver a bold and integrated masterplan that would catalyse the regeneration of the district.

The vision proposed a sustainable, mid-rise cultural community combining arts, civic, residential and commercial activity within a distinctive and walkable urban quarter. Whilst preserving the existing historic street grid and key heritage buildings, the integration of new public spaces, community gardens and cultural venues were integral to establishing a community-oriented identity to attract significant public and private investment.

A major enabler of transformation was the introduction of Community Revitalisation Levy (CRL), allowing tax revenues to fund essential infrastructure upgrades, flood protection measure, and public realm improvements. Landmark interventions, such as St Patrick’s Island and the Jack & Jean Leslie Riverwalk, have supported environmental restoration while encouraging community activity and urban vitality.

Today, the masterplan continues to serve as the blueprint for East Village’s ongoing development, while Calgary is consistently ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world for it’s strong infrastructure healthcare, education, culture. East Village is home to major cultural institutions including the Central Library and National Music Centre, establishing a strong identity for the district. The neighbourhood has attracted more than $3 billion in private investment and $400 million spent on public infrastructure. With over 4,000 residents and dozens of thriving businesses, East Village exemplifies the long-term value of environmental resilience, integrated planning, and public realm investment.

The East Village masterplan will be presented live at the Architecture Today Awards in London in September 2025.
