Broadway Malyan appointed to shape a future-focused school rooted in Jiangnan culture
26th January 2026

We are pleased to share that in collaboration with Jiangsu Chenggui Design Institute, we have been appointed to deliver the architectural design for the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) affiliated Wuxi Binhu Experimental Middle School.

The project is a public junior high school jointly developed by the Binhu District People’s Government, Shanghai International Studies University and the Wuxi Municipal Education Bureau.

With an estimated investment of RMB 350 million, the campus will accommodate 30 classrooms and is now progressing towards the start of construction. On completion, it will provide Wuxi with a new benchmark for high-quality, publicly accessible education.

A bridge between culture, learning and future growth

Our design is guided by the concept ‘Bridge of Crossovers’, positioning the school as both a contemporary landmark within Jiangnan’s cultural landscape and a symbiotic learning community shaped for future education. The campus is conceived as an active dialogue between space and culture, where architecture supports exchange, curiosity and connection.

Bridge in the Sky
Suspended structures release the ground-level space, creating flexible, interactive and multidimensional learning environments where teaching and learning flow dynamically.

Living by the Water
Drawing on Jiangnan spatial principles, cascading courtyards sit beneath the bridge, with a fluid village-like layout forming a STEAM hub that supports both learning and achievement.

Cultural Crossover
Responding to the mission of "Interpreting the World, Shaping the Future," the architecture supports cultural exchange, with spaces designed for dialogue and shared ideas.

Collision and fusion, a dual narrative

The campus is organised around a complementary composition of ‘Bridge + Village’. At ground level, clustered buildings reflect the scale and rhythm of Jiangnan settlements, using layered grey and red brick to create a sense of familiarity and belonging. Above, lightweight suspended volumes, defined by modular systems and white aluminium panels, form a unifying bridge, expressing openness, adaptability and forward momentum.

Designed for use, performance and longevity

Beyond architectural expression, the scheme prioritises functionality and long-term value. Pedestrian and vehicle routes are clearly separated, supported by an efficient pick-up and drop-off strategy. Green building principles, smart campus management and sponge city approaches are integrated throughout, establishing a resilient and sustainable educational environment.

At Broadway Malyan, we see educational design as an expression of how learning happens and how young people grow. It demands a perspective that looks beyond geography and convention, engaging with both local identity and global outlook. This project reflects our commitment to shaping environments that are culturally grounded, socially connected and future-facing.

We look forward to working closely with our educational partners to bring the ‘Bridge in the Sky’ from concept to reality, creating a campus that supports learning, fosters belonging and connects Wuxi to wider global conversations.
