Twenty-five years ago, Broadway Malyan began its journey in Spain with the opening of our Madrid studio. Looking back, I’m amazed by how far we’ve come, and I feel incredibly proud and grateful to have been part of this story, alongside a team that has consistently proven itself to be exceptional.
I write these lines from our new office, nestled among magnificent trees in the heart of Madrid’s Chamberí neighbourhood. With over two million square metres built and a well-established reputation behind us, it’s a pleasure to reflect on the key moments of this remarkable journey.
When I joined Broadway Malyan Spain in 2002 as a Director, I was fortunate to be part of the design team for what would become our first major built project. Espacio Torrelodones, a large shopping centre in the northwest of Madrid, opened to the public in 2006. I visited the site regularly during construction and was struck by the beauty of its natural surroundings. Today, I live nearby and do my weekly shopping there, and each time, I feel pride in the work our team has done to bring the project to life.
A major milestone in the studio’s 25-year history was the 2014 opening of the Terrazas de Mayo shopping centre in my home country, Argentina. It was Broadway Malyan’s first major built project in Latin America, and once again, a remarkable coincidence emerged: it stands directly opposite the site where I completed my military service at the age of 19. Whenever I visit, I pause on the terraces that give the centre its name and look out towards the leafy trees in the distance, recalling the training exercises I once carried out beneath them. Life has a curious way of bringing us back to the most unexpected places.
In 2023, we completed our first major shopping centre in Africa, the Mall of Sfax in Tunisia. At the start of the project, travel to the country was challenging due to security concerns. However, once the situation stabilised, I discovered an exceptional country, home to warm, professional people. Together, we delivered one of the leading malls on the continent. Remarkably, the original concept we sketched during the initial workshop is now faithfully brought to life – an inspiring reflection of the power of collaboration and vision.
There are countless projects that I could mention, across retail, offices, hospitality and residential sectors. Our work now extends across Europe, Latin America and North Africa – an expansion made possible thanks to the trust and partnership of our valued clients.
We are deeply grateful to major clients such as Eurofund, Frey, Klepierre, Unibail Rodamco Westfield, Neinver, ECE, Urbania, Parque Arauco, Cencosud, Real Plaza, Mall Aventura, Costco and Primark, among many others. Their confidence in our expertise has enabled us to grow and explore new markets, pushing the boundaries of design and innovation across continents.
As we celebrate twenty-five incredible years of Broadway Malyan Madrid, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to every member of our studio. It is your knowledge, creativity, and unwavering passion for design, rooted in a culture of collaboration, innovation and shared purpose – that have shaped our journey and made this milestone possible. From those who laid the foundations in our early days to the new talent driving us forward today, your dedication and collaboration have been the true cornerstone of our success.
