GM2080 - A Transport Oriented Development white paper launched
28th September 2018

A new white paper that recommends putting transport oriented development at the heart of Greater Manchester’s long term growth strategy has been published.

The report believes there remains significant untapped potential around the region’s transit hubs and town centres and offers a new data-driven methodology that identifies those areas with the strongest development opportunities.

The report has been jointly authored by Broadway Malyan, urban mobility specialists WSP, planning and socio economic experts GL Hearn and developer contractor Skanska and has been published to coincide with the ongoing review of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework.

The report was launched at an event at the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce where it was presented to key policy stakeholders from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Transport for Greater Manchester, Salford City Council and LCR Ltd.

Broadway Malyan Director of Urbanism Danny Crump, who has led the project for the practice, said: “Greater Manchester is currently at a critical crossroads in its history where it must develop strategies that will deliver the homes and jobs for the significant projected population growth over coming decades.

“We believe that brownfield land will be the undoubted hero of urban intensification in Greater Manchester and that the region’s existing transit hubs offer the best opportunities to develop new vibrant, healthy and connected communities.

“There is a huge amount currently happening in the North, not least the arrival of HS2 in the coming decade and we believe this tool offers a sustainable approach for all of those stakeholders responsible for delivering the region’s growth.”

The report has also been supported by LCR Ltd, the body that manages public land around the country’s transport network and Development Manager Adam Wisher said he felt the GM2080 initiative offered a “credible, data-led approach to identify strategic brownfield sites that could create vibrant communities around rail infrastructure”.

He added: “LCR’s experience alongside our partners in the private and public sector shows that creating integrated transit-led developments such as Kings Cross, Stratford International Quarter and the emerging Mayfield in Manchester requires a long-term vision and patient approach.

“Whilst a number of opportunities identified in GM2080 will be smaller in scale, if done right, the opportunities identified can help drive delivery of jobs, homes and investment for the Greater Manchester economy.”
