New flagship R&D centre opens in Italy
28th March 2018

A new $60m Global Research and Technology Centre for Petronas has been officially launched by Formula 1 duo Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

The Mercedes duo took centre stage at the event to open the new 17,000 sqm facility where the Malaysian oil corporation will develop lubricants for both the domestic car and motor racing.

The development was designed from Broadway Malyan’s Reading studio and delivered in partnership with Milan-based 967 Architects and F&M Engineering.

Broadway Malyan director David Anderson, who led the design project, said he was delighted to see the completion of a project that had originally been won in an international competition.

He said: “It is fitting that this new project has been launched on the eve of the new F1 season and for the current world champion to officially open the facility gives some idea of the importance of this new R&D centre to Petronas.

“For Broadway Malyan this event also marks the culmination of five years of investment in time, energy, expertise and sheer hard work during which our design team relocated to Milan in order to work with our collaboration delivery partners 967.

“This is a striking piece of architecture that is perfectly suited to its Alpine setting and very much reflects the aspirational values of Petronas and their performance partners.

“It offers a dynamic future workplace environment that embraces a range of connected functional spaces including offices, learning and conferencing facilities, laboratories, visitor experience, engineering workshops and welfare facilities that collectively showcase Petronas’ technical expertise.”

Syed Zainal, chairman of Petronas Lubricants International (PLI), said: “Our state-of-the-art technology centre in Turin is the heart of our research and development initiatives around the world. It plays a key role in PETRONAS’ growth strategy, reaching well beyond its original role as a research centre in Europe focused primarily on local needs.

“We will leverage on this centre to bring global expertise to serve the technological and technical requirements of Petronas Lubricants’ business in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and North America.”
