Leading the way in Urban Sketching
25th July 2018

The International Urban Sketchers Symposium held in Porto, Portugal in July this year attracted over 800 sketching enthusiasts from around the world.

Pedro Loureiro and Pedro Alves both architectural illustrators in Broadway Malyan’s Lisbon studio were invited to be instructors and lead a number of workshops for participants.

Pedro Loureiro said: “We were delighted when we were both chosen to be instructors especially when the event was being held in our home country. It is great to spend time teaching and learning from others who share our passion for urban sketching”.

Urban Sketchers is an international non-profit organisation who are dedicated to raising the artistic, storytelling and educational value of on-location sketching. Their annual symposium is held over 3-4 days in a different host city every year. The event includes lectures, activities and workshops taught by professional educators, architects, illustrators and artists.

“We filled Riberia do Porto with hundreds of sketchers” said Pedro Alves “Everywhere you looked there were artists sitting on benches, on the ground or on the stairs capturing the location on paper. Unlike a photograph every drawing was different, showing each artist’s unique perspective and representation of the same place”.
