Landmark hotel refurbishment in Lisbon complete
10th November 2017

A project to transform one of Lisbon’s most glamourous city centre hotels has been completed by Broadway Malyan.

The practice’s Lisbon studio were commissioned to remodel the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, the Minor Group’s flagship 5-star property in the Portuguese capital.

The intervention included modernising the hotel’s 250 guest rooms as well as transforming the main entrance lobby, refurbishing the restaurants, creating a new spa and business lounge and redesigning the hotel’s iconic Sky Bar.

The project created a stunning new arrival for guests by creating a soaring new glazed atrium in the entrance lobby which was refurbished in luxurious gold and blue with new art and classic furniture pieces, in keeping with the hotel’s renowned classic style.

The remodelled front of house also included the creation of a new business lounge for guests as well as a six-room spa, the first in the hotel’s long history and the first in a Tivoli hotel, and the remodelling of two ground floor eateries, the Cervejaria Liberdade seafood restaurant and the Café Liberdade.

The project also included the transformation of the Sky Bar with a new curved staircase and contemporary furniture that has created one of Lisbon’s most exciting venues where guests can enjoy stunning views across the city.

The rooftop restaurant Terraco has also been refurbished with a menu by one of Portugal’s most celebrated chefs, Rui Paula.

“Tivoli Avenida Liberdade is one of the jewel’s in Lisbon’s crown and this project has created a modern 5-star hotel with unrivalled facilities that has lost none of the style and verve on which it has built its reputation over the past 85 years.”

Broadway Malyan director Margarida Caldeira, said the focus of the project was to bring a more contemporary look and feel to the hotel but without losing any of its famous grandeur.

She said: “Tivoli Avenida Liberdade is one of the jewel’s in Lisbon’s crown and this project has created a modern 5-star hotel with unrivalled facilities that has lost none of the style and verve on which it has built its reputation over the past 85 years.

“Our approach was driven by ensuring the hotel retained not just its historic glamour but also its strong Lisbon identity through the colour scheme, art pieces and the work to accentuate the magnificent views from the Sky Bar and rooftop restaurant.”

The Tivoli Avenida Liberdade project is one of three undertaken by Broadway Malyan for the Minor Group in Portugal, which also included transforming the former Tivoli Jardim hotel in Lisbon into the group’s first Avani branded hotel in Portugal and upgrading the Tivoli Carvoeiro on the Algarve from a 4-star to a 5-star hotel.
