The primary use of the Innovation Centre is as a multi tenanted office building, with an emphasis on social enterprise and companies formed as a direct result of research and development being undertaken by the University. The layout takes the form of a ‘cube’ addressing the railway station to the north. The form is a deliberately simple pavilion raised on a plinth, forming an instantly recognisable landmark on the key approach to the town centre and ‘turning the corner’ into the St Peter’s Waterside masterplan.
The elevations continue the minimalist theme, with a simple palette of materials; Northampton Iron Stone cladding the ground floor, vertical format terracotta rainscreen cladding, high performance curtain walling and frameless colour fritted solar shading. Internally the office suites are arranged around a central atrium encouraging interaction between tenants, promoting collaborative working and engendering a sense of pride, ownership and belonging.
