Estação Central do Rossio, Lisbon's iconic central railway station was built in 1887 by architect José Luís Monteiro. Since that time, the station's interior had suffered serious neglect and Broadway Malyan was commissioned to refurbish the building and bring it back to its former glory. By stripping out various additions and alterations, the building has been redesigned to provide better passenger facilities and new tickets halls on two levels integrated with 3,000m² of office space, 1,000m² of retail and food offering, 1,000m² of public gallery and exhibition space as well as a landscaped car-free public square on the site of the former car park. Original stonework and cast iron windows have been restored throughout, and together with new external lighting, the building one again stands as a truly proud part of the city centre.
Winner of Best Refurbishment category at the Construir Magazine Awards 2008
