Backed by a £150 million investment from Royal Mail, the ‘Railnet’ partnership heralded a new partnership with British Rail’s light freight business, Rail Express, with the aim to get one hundred million more letters a year delivered on the day after posting.  Central to these plans were the provision of a new hub and a fleet of 16 new Royal Mail trains. Broadway Malyan was commissioned to design this new road/rail mail distribution hub at Stonebridge Park in London. The apparent simplicity of the building belies the complexity of Royal Mail’s operational requirements and reflects the close co-operation between the client and Broadway Malyan in formulating the brief and managing cost control for this complex project.
