Broadway Malyan was commissioned to design an innovative covered bridge link to replace an existing dilapidated pedestrian bridge, adjacent to Calton Hill, a World Heritage site in Edinburgh. The design concept liberated the original alignment of the existing bridge and presented a new opportunity to design a new terminal building, replacing the existing installation.

The landmark bridge, which was designed in consultation with the Royal Fine Art Commission in Scotland, creates a visual balance between the St James Shopping Centre on one side and the new terminal building on the other. A strong interlocking helix structure provides an innovative and sculptural solution, with a sinuous plan and open-sided design to ensure that the pedestrian has changing views of the city.
