Broadway Malyan's comprehensive planning submission for Stratford Gate, which gained support from the London Borough of Newham and the GLA, led to our appointment on the design and planning of Stratford Edge.
The brief was to deliver high quality private and affordable housing and at the same time support Stratford's progressive regeneration projects and the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games. The site is very size constrained and emphasis was put upon creating innovative public and private open space solutions as well as improving the biodiversity of the adjacent river bank. The scheme comprises a 27 storey tower and six storey lower block incorporating roof terrace. The tower incorporates the use of secondary glazed façade which is splintered and fractured giving the tower a sculptural form which tapers towards the skyline.
The planning process was complicated due to the involvement of the GLA, the Development Corporation, Newham Borough and the Olympic Delivery Authority. Due to the size constrained nature of the site the limited provision of public open space provided a major policy issue. Detailed negotiation with the above stakeholders resulted in the acceptance that off site open space contributions towards the adjacent Olympic legacy park would offset policy objections and the proposal was approved.
