As a result of incremental development over the past 60 years, St. Peter's hospital campus today suffers from a poor quality environment, uninviting approaches and severe parking problems. In addition, many of the buildings are no longer suitable for modern healthcare provision.
The brief given to Broadway Malyan was to prepare a strategic level masterplan that rationalises the site through the demolition of redundant accommodation, the development of new healthcare buildings, improvements to car parking, public transport and landscaping. The submission of an outline planning application was required, within the context of greenbelt policy, to establish a series of development zones which set specific criteria in terms of footprint, building height and parking provision. This will allow flexibility for the Trusts to respond to future changes in healthcare demand. The masterplan will provide a framework for individual buildings and works, ensuring the creation of a legible, operationally efficient and attractive healthcare campus.
