The Concord Group commissioned Broadway Malyan to design a masterplan for New Manhattan - a vibrant mixed-use city-scale project located 10 kilometres south of Chongqing city centre. The vision for the development is an internationally recognised gateway development, containing business towers, retail environments and lifestyle-designed residential accommodation, with strong links to Chongqing's Mountain Parkland.
New Manhattan will be capable of lifting the perception of Chongqing to match its size as one of the world's largest and most productive urban areas. The scheme will be a seed for wider regeneration and will escalate adjacent land values, establishing other opportunities to improve the high street on the west edge of the project and will link the scheme with the Yangtse River.
Our proposals for the masterplan were set out under three options reflecting different responses for the sites geography, land ownership parcels and key features. Our preferred scheme is structured around key areas including 'Broadway', an 80 metre wide urban park which would connect each area and provide a focal point for the development; four contrasting residential neighbourhoods overlooking substantial areas of riverside, lake and parkland; a culture and media centre which would act as a focus for media industries and could potentially include a school and technical college; 'South Gateway', a contemporary business park which would include an expo centre and 'Grand Central', a combined regional-scale retail centre and prestige financial/business district.
