Broadway Malyan, in collaboration with Costain Skanska Joint Venture, was selected to deliver the new Met Office headquarters on a greenfield site following a design competition. The client's brief required that the scheme should not only fulfil the operational requirements of the Met Office, but that it should be sustainable and energy efficient as well as creating a sense of community in line with the organisation's culture. Set within landscaped parkland, the visitors centre and social facilities are housed in a striking building, set around a common area known as 'The Street'.
This concourse connects all floors and buildings with office accommodation spanning from it in a series of wings or 'fingers'. The layout, design and specification of these areas have provided a flexible working environment which can also be adapted to suit future requirements. The scheme, which achieved a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating, incorporates a comprehensive mixed mode energy strategy and innovative Sustainable Urban Drainage system. The £65m Public Private Partnership scheme was completed on time and on budget.
