The Centre for Developmental Origins of Health and Disease is the second phase extension to existing Cancer Sciences Research Building located on the Southampton General Hospital site. The facility provides new laboratories and teaching accommodation for the University of Southampton's School of Medicine. The four storey building will be used for DNA research to establish why we are prone to certain diseases from birth. Whilst the primary objective of the Centre's work will be to prevent coronary heart disease, stroke, non insulin dependent diabetes and osteoporosis, it is certain that significant advances will be made in the prevention of other diseases which in part have developmental origins, namely certain forms of cancer and immunological and neurological diseases. The centre occupies a prominent location directly opposite the main hospital entrance.
