Broadway Malyan was appointed to provide masterplanning, architecture and branding services for the São Francisco Park Reserve on Santiago Island, Cape Verde. The Reserve is a high-end integrated tourist destination that combines a comfortable mix of outdoor pursuits and activities with a range of quality accommodation and resort facilities. The resort masterplan has developed to work with the many and varied beautiful characters of the large site in order to create an iconic resort.
A series of linked but varied resort villages are carefully located to sit within the existing setting and are sited strategically to ensure a varied mix of recreational and residential options as well as commercial and community activities. A comprehensive park reserve system integrates and links all parts of the development while conserving and responding to the existing habitats and environments. Sustainable development principles have been applied and every effort has been made to ensure the consumption of natural resources and energy are kept to a minimum. The masterplan has developed in close liaison with the engineers to locate wind farms, solar farms, bio-mass farms, water recycling plants etc. in the most beneficial locations. Similarly, construction techniques will be based on local materials and longevity of design.
Responding to community needs has also been key to the development of the masterplan. Improvements to the local infrastructure, surrounding neighbourhoods and the generation of employment and economic activities have all been considered. The masterplan includes a range of community development measures such as the cultivation of local produce from within the site to be sold in a local market in the resort. Support for local boat building and fishing, development of an on-site plant nursery and local training initiatives and programmes are all to be developed.
