background and brief
The brief called for the provision of a new shopping centre to regenerate a neglected area close to the historic centre of the city of Santarém, Portugal.
The W Shopping project comprises 17,000m² of retail space, 16 apartments and 2,000m² of office space along with a cinema and bowling alley.

design response
The striking building has six levels above ground and four basement car parking levels providing a total of 600 car parking spaces. The 11,000m² shopping centre occupies the first three levels providing a total of 70 units, including a new concept supermarket designed by Broadway Malyan.
A 4 screen cinema and bowling alley are situated on the fourth level, and the top two floors comprise 16 apartments (W Residence) commanding spectacular views across the city.
