Beloura Shopping, Portugal
background and brief
The brief called for the creation of a high quality, contemporary shopping centre with good car parking provision in order to win customers from a nearby, much larger centre.
The site, adjacent to the Sintra-Cascais road in Quinta da Beloura, was originally formed of nine separate plots joined together to form a unique development opportunity.

design response
The building is divided into three distinct parts, each with changing levels. The spaces in between the buildings act as double-height links allowing the building to step down the steep hill. Tented structures enclose each linked area, the main entrance and the central area, which contains a large 'praça'. The two-level basement car park has spaces for 650 cars, with a further 150 spaces at surface level. The centre comprises 74 retail units, a 6 screen cinema and a Supercor supermarket for department store, El Corte Ingles, the first stand-alone unit in Portugal.
