Royal seal of approval for Broadway Malyan university project
19th January 2018

A building designed and delivered by Broadway Malyan for Coventry University has been officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The royal couple toured the £59 million Science and Health Building, which will transform the training opportunities for nurses, paramedics, midwives and other health professionals.

The building, which replicates the patient journey with immersive facilities that include a mock ambulance, patient wards, an operating theatre and two rehabilitation houses as well as the UK’s largest teaching lab, was opened to students in October 2017.

Mark Evans, who delivered the project for Broadway Malyan from the practice’s Birmingham studio, said the royal visit was a wonderful conclusion to an exciting and fulfilling project.

He said: “Not only have we delivered a piece of landmark architecture, we have developed alongside the university an exciting pedagogical transformation of learning through simulation and the feedback from the faculty staff and students has been fantastic.

“Welcoming the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to officially open the building is a wonderful conclusion and deserved recognition to the project and the hard work carried out by the team and it demonstrates how very proud and impressed Coventry University is of the Science and Health Building.”

John Latham, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, added: “We were proud to demonstrate the innovative teaching and hands-on activities that are transforming the experiences of our nursing and healthcare students.

"Their Royal Highnesses opening the building marked a new phase in our commitment to offer some of the finest healthcare teaching in the UK. This was an important day for our staff, students, our partners and the city of Coventry.”
