The talk by Gonçalo Byrne, whose body of work includes the iconic Marine Traffic Control Tower in the Portuguese capital (pictured), will form the centrepiece of the idea-sharing event which will also see presentations from Broadway Malyan’s global sector experts.

The symposium takes place in the same week as a joint event at the Lisbon studio with the Urban Land Institute that will see Broadway Malyan directors Ed Baker and James Rayner present to an audience of property professionals on the concept of ‘Smart Cities’.

Broadway Malyan chairman Stuart Rough said the symposium is an opportunity to get the directors from all studios together to exchange information while also embracing different points of view.

He said: “A passion for design is the thing that ties us all together and the symposium is an opportunity for us to share and explore different ideas and identify best practice that can be implemented across the regions in which we operate.

“Goncalo is one of the best known architects in Portugal so it is fantastic that he has agreed to come and speak to us during the symposium and I have no doubt his contribution will be incredibly well received.”

Margarida Caldeira, who runs the Lisbon studio and is chair of the practice’s America’s board, said the ULI event would be covering an issue that was right at the heart of current urban planning thinking.

She said: “The concept of ‘Smart Cities’ continues to evolve and this event will allow Ed and James to share the expertise they have gathered from projects in markets as diverse as Angola, India, Brazil and Malaysia and their thoughts on how cities will adapt in the face of growing urbanisation.”
