Met Office, Exeter
The Met Office Exeter is the award-winning headquarters building for the UK’s national weather service. Broadway Malyan worked in collaboration with Costain Skanska Joint Venture to deliver the new headquarters following a design competition. The key demands of the brief were that the scheme should be sustainable and energy efficient as well as creating a sense of community befitting the organisation’s culture.
Set within landscaped parkland, the conference centre and shared facilities are located along an internal ‘street’ which connects all floors and buildings. The office accommodation spans from this concourse in a series of wings or ‘fingers’. The layout, design and specification of these areas provides a flexible working environment which can also be adapted to suit future requirements.
The Met Office Exeter provides workspaces for 1100 people and also contains various functional spaces including two super computer halls, a college, restaurant, coffee bar, gymnasium, shop, national meteorological library and an international conference centre. A comprehensive mixed mode energy strategy ensured that the scheme received a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
