Bournville College is an award winning new college campus situated on the site of a former car plant. The college offers further education, higher education and vocational teaching for 15,000 students and the new building consolidates the college’s existing three campuses, housing them all under one roof for the first time. The college is the first building to be completed on the former factory site and sets the standard for the wider development of the area.
The new college is based around a linear spine which houses the classrooms and gradually rises in height towards the main road. As it reaches the road, the building forms a dramatic cantilever to create a strong and dynamic image for the college. The spine is linked to the “street” which acts as the social heart of the college. The street uses massive glu-laminated timber columns and beams, which tie the scheme together and former an elegant colonnade facing a new public square.
The use of glu-laminated timber formed part of the environmental strategy and the college achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.
