Al Bandar, Abu Dhabi
Al Bandar is a mixed-use island development designed for developer ALDAR in Abu Dhabi forming the first part of the prestigious Al Raha Beach development. Reached via a causeway, the development comprises over 530 luxury residential apartments, 5,000m² retail and commercial space, landscaped private gardens, a public marina and water taxi terminal.
Three sleek, white apartment buildings project into the water giving the impression of ships leaving port. The folded facades create balconies for the apartments while also responding to the ripples of the water. These are contrasted with a red brick apartment building and point office tower, suggestive of a traditional dock building a lighthouse respectively.
Al Bandar was one of the first projects in Abu Dhabi to be based on the new Estidama sustainability regulations, Abu Dhabi’s ambitious new green building certification system. The entire Al Raha Beach Development is designed to discourage car usage with an extensive water-taxi transport system designed to link the developments. Al Bandar itself is pedestrian-friendly with cars entering an underground car park as soon as they arrive on the island.
