Practice’s vision for new Brazilian city launched by Moura Dubeux

22 May, 2012

The masterplan vision for Convida Suape, a new city in North Eastern Brazil, designed by global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan, has been officially launched by the practice’s client, Moura Dubeux Engineering and Cone S/A.

Convida Suape is a sustainable urban extension of the city of Cabo de Santo Agostinho near Recife, the capital city of the State of Pernambuco, and will result in the transformation of a 470 hectare area to accommodate up to 100,000 inhabitants.

The practice’s design was delivered by a world-class integrated team of masterplanners, urban designers, architects, landscape architects and branding specialists based in its São Paulo, Lisbon and London offices.

It promotes a compact urban model for walkability and sustainable access to learning, healthcare and employment. It features green buildings and new building typologies with integrated utility provision, will enhance the natural landscape and river corridors, and includes a substantial on-going habitat-restoration programme.

The city will be built in four phases with ten distinct neighbourhoods providing 25,000 new homes set in 154 hectares of open space, as well as substantial provision for new businesses, health, education and leisure activities.

Practice Director Margarida Caldeira said: “Convida Suape will set a benchmark for strategic urban development and city expansion projects in North Eastern Brazil, now one of the fastest growth areas in the world. The launch is testament to the integrated work of our world-class team of design experts delivering on our client’s ambitions in partnership with its stakeholders.”

Since the practice opened its São Paulo office in 2011 it has secured a series of projects in South America, including masterplanning and major mixed-use projects in Brazil for clients such as Moura Dubeux which it is supporting on several schemes, and it is now actively targeting countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.

Practice wins brief to design global R&D centre in China

15 May, 2012

Global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan has secured a brief to provide a full range of design services for the delivery of a global headquarter, research and development, hospitality and visitor centre in China.

The practice’s client, Grand Agriseeds Technology, is a market leader in the super high-yielding hybrid rice seed production methods pioneered by Professor Yuan Longping, the ‘father of hybrid rice’.

The practice will provide masterplanning, architectural and landscape design services for the project, from concept to detailed design and onsite delivery, with the centre set to become a global centre for hybrid rice research, a showcase for sustainable development and an international leisure destination in the Qixianling area of Hainan, China’s southernmost province.

Located in Baoting County, north of Sanya on Hainan Island, the ‘Shennong Valley Resort’ will sit in a stunning 35 acre site between the famous ‘Qixianling Seven Angels’ mountain ridge and the valley’s terraced rice fields.

The design will maximise views of the ridge and the valleys below for visitors staying in new luxury private villas, large format club house villas and a luxurious five star resort hotel, operated by the Intercontinental Hotel Group and including conference and spa facilities.

The scheme will also include a new museum of hybrid rice, showcasing new production technologies, global solutions and the story of rice cultivation in Asia, which in itself is the story of civilisation.

The centre is the brainchild of Grand Agriseeds Technology’s chairman Mr. Huang Peijin. His vision is that the facility will play a strategic role in realising the company’s ambition to be the world’s leading innovator in the field of high-yield hybrid rice and a leader in the crusade to alleviate future world food crises. It will also reflect the company’s commitment to sustainable development, local habitat and integration of innovative green technology.

Broadway Malyan director Jeremy Salmon said: “This is a very special project because it is driving such an important global agenda. We are able to contribute to this prestigious, multi-faceted project as a result of our practice’s growing reputation in China for the delivery of fully-integrated, sustainable and future-proofed schemes, the unrivalled diversity of our expert designers, their world-class skills, expertise and distinctive client focus.”

The practice is now developing the concept design, with detailed design work due to commence in the early summer and construction expected to start in early 2013.

The project is the latest in a string of recent significant wins for the practice, which recently secured an appointment to deliver a high-profile strategic planning review of the Minhang District in the heart of Shanghai. The 130 square kilometre site includes a large length of the city’s main river, the Huangpu River, is close to the famous ‘Shanghai Expo’ site and takes in one of China’s heartland industrial zones.

Expert reacts to joint planning initiative launched by Abu Dhabi and Singapore

10 May, 2012

The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to gain and share first-hand experience on urban planning strategies, methods and best practices.

The MoU formally sets out a framework for the exchange of information and experience between the UPC and URA and under the agreement both parties will collaborate to create benchmark urban planning policies and initiatives that are closely integrated with land use, infrastructure and transportation solutions.

Ed Baker, Singapore-based Director of Masterplanning at global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan, said: “Abu Dhabi and Singapore are dynamic regional hubs that play an increasingly important role in the global economy.

“Both continue to recognise the importance of good sustainable planning through ongoing investment in urban planning initiatives that set an example and lead the way for other global cities. The latest initiative is particularly marked at time when many countries are talking about austerity measures and cutting back on investment in the built environment.

“With long-standing bases in both Abu Dhabi and Singapore, and an active partnering role in major strategic projects of the kind that are helping to deliver long-term visions such as Plan Abu Dhabi 2030, our world-class team of masterplanners and planners welcomes news of the MoU, supports its progressive agenda and looks forward to helping deliver on its aims.”

In February the practice’s masterplan for a new 680 hectare waterfront community of up to 55,000 inhabitants on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, delivered for client Aldar PJSC, was approved by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council.
